The West Wight Wander 2009 takes place tomorrow, Sunday 12 July 2009 and currently has 35 pre-registered walkers, with more expected on the day.

Trish and Jan, the West Wight Wander organisers, have worked hard behind the scenes to make the 2009 West Wight Wander a success.

The West Wight Wander is a 25 or 13 mile walk (depending on your preference) and takes in some of the most beautiful countryside on the west of the Isle of Wight.

The West Wight Wander is open to all United Kingdom Fire and Rescue Service serving and retired personnel.

The Route: The walk consists of two routes, 25 miles and 13 miles, to be completed by 1830hrs.

Both start and finish at Yarmouth Fire Station, Station Road, Yarmouth.

Following the coastal path to Alum Bay and The Needles, then to Freshwater, the short distance walkers return via the old railway track alongside the River Yar.

Long distance walkers continue along the coastal path and return via Newbridge and Shalfleet passing the National Trust property of Mottistone en-route. The walk takes in outstanding coastal and downland views.

A route description will be available to all walkers.

Ordnance Survey Explorer Map No: 29 will be marked with both routes and on display at the start of the events.

All walkers must register at the start and collect their tally for checkpoint purposes.

Registration will commence at 0745hrs for long distance walkers to start at 0830hrs and 0845 hrs for short distance walkers to start at 0930hrs.
